TOG with only Grammar Level Students

I only have one child.  Is Tapestry right for me?

This page is dedicated to helping parents who may be considering using Tapestry with only one child.  Tapestry can look like a lot of cost and bulk for schooling one child.  The letters below were unsolicited by Lampstand Press.  We simply present threads from two different yahoogroups, unedited.  We hope it serves you in making your final decision.

My son is 12 right now and in 8th grade. I am thinking of using TOG for high school. I have a used copy of year 2 coming to get a good feel for TOG in the coming months.

My question is about using it for just one child. I know it has info for all grades in all four years. Is it worth it to buy for one child for the last 4 years of schooling? Does anyone else plan on doing it this way?

I would love your thoughts.

I have several children and they are younger, but even if I only had one, I would use it. For $130, in my opinion, it is a bargain. If you have a good library system, you will be able to get most of the books from the library. Plus, with the popularity of TOG, I would think you could sell it easily when you are done and get a good portion of your money back.

For all TOG offers - history, worldview, literature, geography, vocabulary, and hands-on activities, I don't think you can find a less expensive option.

Just my opinion.... :-)

Hi Terri-
I am homeschooling only one child (older 2 are grown & gone to college) and we just completed TOG year 3. We loved it. We used it for grade 7/8 (I tailor it to her level of skill, and we'll be completing Grade 8 math this summer) and plan to use Year 3 again in her senior year but at the Rhetoric level. We began with TOG where we left off in our sequence of history.  This fall we'll begin grade 9 with Year 4 and will be concentrating much more on geography (she wants to parallel her "regular schooled" peers) and I will add a course I'm designing in citizenship which I will give her high school credit for. We plan on doing Government thoroughly in grade 12 along with Economics.  So... we will get MUCH use & definitely enjoyment out of our TOG Year 3.

I'm also helping a lady who has 4 kids to school and had not schooled her oldest two kids this past yr(gr 11 & gr 12), by working with them to see what they lack for graduation & letting her use my TOG Year 3 as that's where they were in history. Her kids were almost in tears as they were aware that their mother not only didn't have much money for books/curric but she is also extremely unorganized. What a blessing our TOG Year 3 has become!

We've most definitely got our money's worth and then some. I usually spend much more for all the components & resources for any other curriculum. TOG is almost 1/3 of what I normally spend; is extremely teacher friendly (saves me time & stress), and the level of history, reading & writing is far above anything else we've ever used.

My two cents: TOG is worth it and then some! ...and no consumables, so you can re-sell the complete curric when you're through with it.  I've not found this quality of schooling resources at this low cost ANYWHERE. You can tell....... we love TOG! My dd loves it too! and that's a first.

I would start TOG this fall at wherever you were in your sequence of history. We will be using BJU for Algebra I, Powerglide for Spanish (which is for 2yrs of Spanish), and Apologia for Science. Also-Easy Grammar Plus for grammar review.(We finished the Abeka grammar this past yr excluding the composition part, as TOG has a much better writing program). Also- Write Source & Writer's Inc. which we have already.

Blessings,
V

I've been homeschooling an only child for over 5 years now.  We started TOG last year in our first year of high school.  We are so pleased with the quality of education she is attaining and have not found it difficult to adapt to
just one child.  The discussion times are just with Mom, but thankfully the teacher notes allow me to appear reasonably educated in the subject matter.  :-)  I'd participate in a coop if it were available, but that is a luxury not to be
found where we are living.  The point is, it still works, and works well.
