Graphic organizers can be used for a variety of assessment purposes (not just for organizing thoughts before writing a paper, or for taking notes on lectures)!

Some ways to use graphic organizers as ASSESSMENT tools:

In group settings, ask students to come up with a mind map based on their assigned readings. They can do this in small groups (in competition), individually, or as a collective effort.
On tests, provide a graphic organizer and have students fill them rather than answer multiple choice questions or fill-in-the-blank questions.
