Journals

Journals can provide a unique opportunity for assessment.  A journal is usually a collection of short entries, made over a period of time.  Usually, one journal contains entries on a single topic, for example: Spiritual Journal, Literature Response Journal, Travel Journal, Field Trip Journal, etc.

When using journals for assessment purposes, start with defining the goals and standards for the journal.  Here are some questions to aid you in this process:

  • What is the working title of this journal?
  • Why are we using a journal for this assessment, as opposed to other forms of written expression?
  • Will this be an "open" journal (and open to whom?), or a "private" journal?
  • Will this journal be graded?
  • Will neatness, format, punctuation, handwriting, etc. be graded, or factored into this assessment, or not?
  • How long should entries be?
  • How frequently should the student make entries?

Some ideas for using journals in home school settings are:

Grammar years:

  • Daily entries from quiet times
  • A paragraph or two about each field trip (if you're doing lots of them)
  • A record of daily events, or high points, of each day on a family vacation

In Dialectic/Rhetoric years:

  • Weekly entries on thoughts and questions raised by the week's study about matters of faith and practice
  • Daily entries from quiet times
  • Travel journal, especially for missions trips or foreign study abroad
  • Journal of Argumentation: to record attempts at supporting chosen positions on key issues during the year.  Will connect formal logic and historical studies.
