Oral Presentations

What is an oral presentation? It can take many forms: speeches, talks and group discussions can all qualify.  Oral presentations can also be components of more extensive projects: demonstrations, plays, multimedia presentations and debates.

When using oral presentations for ASSESSMENT purposes, the important thing to start with is the development of standards.  Depending on the child's age, these can best be developed with the aid of the student.  In order to do this, follow these steps:

  1. Watch examples of the kind of oral presentation you are planning to require.  If possible, watch a variety of attempts at this project.
  2. Talk with the student about what he thought was important in the presentation.  What made it good?  If there were a variety of examples, why were some better than others?  How would the student improve the ones he's viewed?  Etc.
  3. With the student, or group of students if you have a co-op, work out a chart, or continuum, of standards for the presentation.  Like the process outlined on the self-evaluation page, you can come up with a grading chart, or you can develop a grading "continuum" like the one pictured below.
  4. Using such a page, students can grade their co-op mates and/or themselves. Teachers can grade students.  To use the continuums, just put an X on the spot on the continuum where you feel the student's performance fell.  Then, average the X's for an overall grade.  This assessment method has the added advantage that the student knows where his strengths and weaknesses lay, so he can improve another time.
