Hello. I am excited about TOG. I am just wondering. This fall when we start year one, I will be teaching my 9yr old son and 6yr old son. My 9yr old son would have been going into 3rd grade. He is a strong reader and can read on his own. I will be starting Kindergarten with my 6yr old son. I am looking for advice regarding my 9yr old. I have a set of twin 3yr olds son/daughter as well, so I am wanting him to be able to read the reading assignments on his own. Do you think the UG readers would be too hard for him? Should I just stick with the LG for the both of boys? I like the list of UG books. I am torn. Any suggestions?
My 9-year-old is a strong reader and can easily handle the UG books on her own. (We are in Year 2.) I end up reading a lot aloud for the benefit of my 10-year-old who is dyslexic but I have no doubt your strong reader could do it on his own.
But I should say that it really depends not only on his reading level, but also on his background of general knowledge. Sometimes kids are strong readers in the sense of being able to understand words on the page, but that doesn't mean they can process information as sophisticated as in UG.
It's the history that I think might present a challenge.
To judge this, I think you'll need to get your hands on some of the UG history books and just try your son out on them.
My 9yo did UG this year. But it was his third or fourth year with Tapestry, and he'd been reading on his own for a couple of years.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I guess I head on over to the library and get a couple of books from each level.
Have a great day!
