Just thought I'd share a little bit about a product I recently read and learned about. Someone in an earlier post mentioned AVKO's Sequential Speller. It's a spelling program that introduces spelling words by word families instead of "as the child might encounter words in his/her reading." This word families approach helps the child to remember better the spelling of the words for long term. My children do well in the spelling program they are using now, but I want to make sure they have the tools to remember what they're learning now in future years.

Related (somewhat)...this past weekend we had our state homeschooling convention, at which IEW's Andrew Pudewa spoke. His workshop on spelling was excellent. After the class, I was able to ask him about his thoughts on the Sequential Speller program. He said it's a good program. Mr. Pudewa had suggested a really fun project (which might work its way into the IEW material in the near future) he called "Sound City." It was a fun, visual, auditory, and tactile way to present word groups of similar sounds/spelling. It dovetailed very nicely with the Sequential Speller program. http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So, thank you to the person who had posted (last year?) about Sequential Speller and the AVKO organization. I'm looking forward to having my children try this spelling program.
