View Full Version : Only lower grammar students and Yr 2???

Hi, I bought Yr 1 last year and did not use it as it repeated much of what we had previously learned using Sonlight. However, I love TOG and would like to try Yr2 this year. I have only lower grammar students- Has anyone used TOG with ONLY LG students. I would only be supplementing our core subjects (3 R's), but wonder if waiting a couple years would be more beneficial???
Any comments??
Thanks!

I'm finishing up Y3 with second grade twins, a kindergartner, and a two year old. We started TOG Y1 with kindergarten twins and younger, Y2 with first grade twins and younger.

I know I was eager to begin, but I have no regrets. We have put down a foundational layer of history by going through these lower grammar years with TOG that has already paid off tremendously. It is very satisfying to see my children's pretend play informed by history--not licensed characters. Also, I am beginning to see their understanding of world history and geography improve their reading comprehension. They are able to put children's picture books, which are often set in other times or places, into a context that I know they couldn't manage if we had not added TOG to our basics. And now that my second graders are taking off with reading chapter books, I really see the pay-off.

In the introductory notes of the Classic year plans Marcia writes that TOG in lower grammar years should be viewed as the icing on the cake. That is very true and should be prioritized that way. Still, TOG steered me toward some great literature and children's books that I might not have discovered otherwise.
