We have really been enjoying the History Lives series. I think the third one in the series is recommended in Year 2 Redesign, but we are enjoying all of them!
The first book, Peril and Peace, has been great for our kids to "catch up" on church history (we are jumping into TOG in year 2 so they don't have all the background I'd like). The next book, Monks and Mystics, has wonderful information about the church in the middle ages.
The books are mostly stories that really bring the church leaders and believers to life. This is not dumbed-down reading by any means. The books have small print and many (200+) pages. These are great for read-alouds for younger kids, or independent reading for the older ones.

Hope this helps someone!
