Hi everyone! I am the Mom of two wonderful DC's. One DD-14 and one DS-11. We had truly amazing lead up to our decision to home school this school year. We had contemplated doing this years ago when DD was younger, more then one time, but I thought that we would clash too much and or other things weren't right at the time. This year God straightened our path to home school in an amazing way. The kids, both asked frequently over the summer, and with a schedule change at my work I was no longer employed. My husband and I made the final decision 3 days before registration for public school. I talked with my girlfriend and also had an idea where to start, having done research a few years ago. We took letters to schools to withdraw the kids and started with a curriculum that I thought would work. We have changed a few things up and did that fairly quickly in the school year. It is okay, but could be better. They are learning, but I want history and lit to be more exciting and grab their interest more.

Here is some other background for my questions.
DD-14(DOB Aug)wants to be an atourney. Very sure of this decision. Was in the gifted program at public school and reads at a college level according to the Star Reading testing. She is also ahead in Math. I feel that her grammar and writting are not up with the rest of her levels, however, she has improved a lot this year. She choose to do 7th grade grammar with Abeka in order to learn things she hadn't had at school.

DS-age 11(DOB Jan)wanted to do CIA as a spy, until he was thinking it through the other day and came in and said he was no longer sure because he realized that he could get killed doing that job. http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I told him he had plenty of time to decide. When he helped look a books, he thought and I thought that he was on the 6th grade level even though this year at public school would be 5th. He has done well with grades, except we switched spelling back to a 5th grade level after a placement test with Spelling Power. He was also in the gifted program at school and reads as of the end of 4th grade at a 6th-late 7th grade level. He hates to write, but has done very well on his book reports that I have had him do. He, like his sister loves to read.

My delima is this. I don't want to switch around the curriculum, especially since we are starting high school next year. I want to teach them together as much as possible. I want them to be independent learners and to be able to think for themselves.(This would have been so much easier if I would have just started at kindergarten-I know I can't look back.) http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

1. What level would you start the kids on? I am starting with Year 1. I think DD could handle R, but not sure DS at UG or D.

2. Does each level also do the work of the previous level for the questions, vocab, spelling or only their level?

3. We are looking at Easy Grammar for next year and continuing in Spelling Power for DS-DD will do an SAT Vocab Book as her Spelling tested at late 11th grade. Science is going to continue to be Apologia-we all love it. Spanish will be added next year as well. Should we do a Latin study too?

4. Any other help out there for new homeschoolers starting high school?

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read this long posting. I really appreciate any advice you can give. I am the first one in our group to do high school and only have this year under my belt http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif, so hopefully I will be able to help the rest when they get there. My girlfriend is a year behind me.

Hi ______ ! http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welcome, and I'll try to answer some of your questions.

One quick question: will you try to use the library a lot or buy most of your books? That makes a difference when "placing" your kiddos in a level (UG, D or R). Basically, you can change levels each week if you think one level is too hard/too easy/too boring/too challenging - - whatever. A lot depends on the lit choice for the week. For example, I have a 14yo ds who is doing a lot of the D level lit, even though he could "handle" the R lit. I made that choice because he'll have the chance to go through this year again before he graduates, so I want to save the "great books" until later. Does that make sense?

You can purchase the curriculum and then look at each week and decide which books you'd like to read now, and which ones you'd like to do in four years (with your son). That's another option.

Also, keep in mind that the R level is definitely honors/college prep work.

The history is easy to jump back and forth on as well, because you can assign more or less depending on the week if necessary.

Regarding your second question, each level does different questions and vocab from the other levels. Many of the questions overlap; for example, the D level may have four questions, while the R level includes those same four questions plus three harder ones.

I wouldn't personally add Latin, as long as you're doing a good SAT prep/vocab course. But, that's just me. You may want to start TOG and decide later whether you all can handle it.

HTH a little! You'll do great! http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Becca,

Thank you for your reply.

I would love to use our library for books if possible and have printed the list off of Bookshelf. I am planning this week in my spare time LOL to search online to see for what all they have. I have also thought that I would get some of them and have the kids read a little to see if they are able to do the level D & R. My DD doesn't have a choice as she starts high school next year. I am just not sure how much to float or if I'll have to float 11yo DS between UG and D.

I am planning on going to the State Home School Convention and physically looking at the whole book. Hopefully buying it there or if I get all of my other research done I will get it before then online.

I am just driving myself nuts on knowing it's high school next year and not wanting to mess it up. I also don't want to have DS lose the confidence that he has gained by skipping a year either. Home school has been the best thing for his self esteem as he didn't fit well at public school and a majority of it was because he was in the gifted program and swims competively instead of playing football or basketball. He has made some great new friends from DD home school volleyball team. DD has made some great new friends too and still sees her old friends at youth group and church.

I will get on the library search and get the levels figured out. I feel very peaceful about doing TOG for the next 6 years total. I will also just keep praying.

Thanks again.
Anita

Anita,

As a foreign language teacher by training, I would recommend that you not add both Spanish and Latin in the same year. Get at least a year or two of one under your belt before you add a second.

Anita, just a quick follow-up. Your dd DOES have a choice as to whether or not to do R work. She very well MAY be able to handle it. However, it's not really a reading level issue, but rather a maturity issue. It's perfectly acceptable to leave her in the D level this year while you get used to TOG. Even at that level, she will be doing MUCH more than would be required of her in a public school. She'll have the opportunity to think deeply, to compare ideas, to make connections as never before!

I didn't move my oldest ds into the R level until 11th grade. I called the previous two years regular history, and the R levels will be honors history.

HTH!

Becca and Beth,

I am sorry I didn't get back to this right away. It got a little hectic here with family in from out of town. Thank you both so much for your input. I will get to the library, hopefully, next week and start looking.

I will also just start with one foreign language at a time.

Thank you both again for all of you input. I really appreciate it. Have a great week.

Anita

No worries!! One more quick thought: to clarify, you do NOT have to put your daughter in the rhetoric level just because she's in high school. Ninth grade can go either way, depending on the maturity level of the student. Some of the material is VERY advanced, so it may help to be flexible in this area as well.

Just one more thing to add to the pot! http://tapestryofgrace.groupee.net/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
