I am having trouble narrowing down all these good book choices for Week 21 on causes of Civil War. I have a dialectic/sometimes rhetoric 14 yo boy (who probably won't repeat YR 3 ) a 12 yo dialectic/sometimes upper grammar boy ( who will repeat Yr 3 again ) and a 10 yo upper grammar boy. We have studied the civil war with a unit study book before but not probably to the level of TOG.

I am having trouble choosing which books for the oldest two (North Star to Freedom - 150 pgs)
and A Nation Torn (100 pgs) plus the spine reading in BJU text which we always start with . (This week it is 22 pgs) . That's alot of reading for one week. How do you cover the causes of the war and the underground railroad without reading both books? If you had to pick one, which one? Could I drop BJU text or do we need this for overview.

Any input would be welcome from anyone who has gone thru this week. Thanks,

    Hi,
If I had to choose one, I'd choose A Nation Torn. Yes, I'd drop the BJU text this week. One hundred pages is a lot for a 14 year old boy to read in one week...I agree. You might look through it and assign only chapters that are information that he hasn't learned yet...and an amount that you know will challenge him, yet is doable.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me make some decisions. It's tough to say "no" to so many good resources and pick "the" best one.
