Geography Confusion

I am looking at the weekly overview for Year 1 redesigned. It tells the student to learn about land forms, major bodies of water etc. Then we go to the Geography section of the student activity pages.This is where the confusion comes in. I am assuming we need a geography book of some sort. There are geography terms that I don't even know what they are. Such as cataracts and arroyo. Can someone recommend a good resource. Did I miss something?

I was confused over the same issue. I already own a book called The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide. It is by Maggie Hogan and Cindy Wiggers. It had that information in it. The terms are in the back and ready to be made into flash cards.

Thank You so much for posting the geography flash cards. I was just about to do a search for examples of each of the terms to print out for my girls 7 and 9. This saves a lot of time.

Bay: a part of a sea or large lake that extends into the land.

Canal: a waterway dug through land in order for small ships or boats to pass.

Cliff: a very steep slope or drop-off of land or rock.

Delta: a deposit of earth and sand at the mouth of a river, usually in a triangular shape.

Inlet: a narrow strip of water that extends from a body of water into the land or that runs between two islands.

Island: land that is surrounded by water on all sides.

Mountain range: a row of connected mountains.

Mouth (river): the part of a river that empties into the sea or some other body of water.

Peninsula: a piece of land extending far out into a body of water.

Plateau: a large plain high above sea level.

Port: a place along a coast where ships can be sheltered from storms; in towns or cities, a place where ships can load and
unload their cargo.

Sea: a large, salty body of water.

Source (river): the beginning of a river, usually a spring.

Summit: the highest point of a mountain or hill.

Tributary: a river that runs into another larger river.

Arroyo: the dry bed of a stream.

Cataracts: a large waterfall, or a part of a river that rushes quickly, usually because of rocks below the surface.

Chasm: a deep opening or crack in the earth.

Estuary: a broad mouth of a river, into which the tide flows.

Fall line: a line that marks the end of a plateau and the beginning of the lower plains; many cataracts and waterfalls occur
along this line.

Fiord (fjord): a long, narrow bay bordered by steep cliffs.

Glacier: a mass of ice and snow that builds up because the winter snowfall exceeds the summer melting; usually formed in
the mountains and moving slowly down it.

Isthmus: a narrow strip of land, with water on two sides, that connects two larger bodies of land.

Mesa: a small, high plateau with a flat top and steep rocky sides.

Piedmont: the area of land lying at the foot of a mountain range.

Precipice: a very steep drop, often at the edge of a mountainside.

Reservoir: a place that collects and stores water, often a large lake created by damming a river.

Strait: a narrow strip of water that connects two larger bodies of water.
