I serve on my local pregnancy care center's board and I read books on culture that have to do with our mission.
Most recently I read The Future of Marriage. The author spends time looking at marriage in the earliest civilization including Summer.
Thanks to From Distant Days I read the Sumerian "love poems" and was able to understand better his distinctions on marriage there as opposed to Egypt and how marriage was changing in terms of its definition at that time. Oddly, although I understand why you suggest the students not reading them, I found them very alien and they made my other reading much clearer for me.
Anyway, thanks for challenging me to try this literature on my own.
