Thread: Is a Kindle worth buying?

  1. #1
Hi! I'm wondering, do you find that the books needed for your students are available on Kindle? If so, do you save a considerable amount, or is it nominal? I've never even considered getting a Kindle before, but if I can save on our books, I just might have to think about it.
    Thanks!

I have my doubts about whether it would save you a ton of money.

First you have to include the cost of the machine itself in your figures of savings.

Next, anything out of copyright that is available for free is also available for free just as a plain text or PDF download on your computer thanks to many sites that offer that.

Finally a lot of books don't come in Kindle format. I've checked a couple that are used in the first year like the Norton Anthology and they aren't available. Further you'd want to match editions so for an older work, you'd have to get the same edition (and I think I may have read about problems with pagination in the Kindle, but you'll need to investigate that further).

Finally, some books that come in Kindle format are still available cheaper by buying used (especially if you try to look and buy local).

That's sort of what I thought. I was just looking for some of the LG titles, which I found none. Thought maybe some of the R or D books would be more prevalent. Thanks for your response!

I was very much hoping a Kindle would work for Rhetoric since I have two in that level sharing books. But when I searched for the Rhetoric books in the Kindle Store, many were not available in that format. Alas, my seemingly great idea was never to come to fruition. It was fun to consider if even only briefly!

We purchased a Nook instead because we could borrow from our library. I have found some titles in pdf for free and some at a nominal price on B&N.com. We have been happy with this and it has alleviated some of the "I need that book now! hurry up!" symdrome...just my 2 cents.

I received a nook for Christmas, and the biggest thing has been having my own copy of what my rhetoric child is reading, without taking up extra space in my house. Plus, I can make notes and highlights and search the book during discussion - a very nice feature. Before I had the actual nook, I had the nook download on my PC, and downloaded a ton of Barnes and Noble classics for free last year. They give away a free nookbook every friday and were giving away 12 classics a week last August/September, many of which we were reading this year. If you read the books your high school student is reading, it can be very handy. I don't do it for every book, but I like to when I can. This year (Y3), we did a lot of our own literature choices, so it became pretty necessary.
If you have an iphone or blackberry or android phone, you can download the nook app (kindle, too, I think) for free and have many of the benefits without actually purchasing the e-reader itself. I would go for the nook, because of the borrowing from the library option that someone else mentioned.

    Hi,

I use my Kindle for some of the books my R student reads. On many books classic literature books I can save a good deal, not just on the cost of the book itself, but there is no shipping charge either.

Kindle is adding the ability to borrow books from the library later this year. BIG CAVEAT though, for both Kindle and Nook, is that your library has to participate for this feature to work. Mine doesn't.

I think there are many ebooks for your R level student. If you use Calibre, you can easily convert your ebooks from other formats (including PDF) to the kindle format. They have refurbs for $99 right now, and I definitely think it's worth it!

I have found personally because I have 2 D level students...that the books I can get on the Nook reduce my cost and each has their own copy. I wouldn't even consider it for the lg ug students at my house. It is nice when we are on the go, to have most of the books they are reading in the Nook so it is less to carry. I wouldn't purchase one to save money though. My children saved their pennies and bought their own.
