Thread: Finding an accurate booklist

  1. #1
I have been using TOG Digital for 2 years, and am considering whether to continue next year with Year 1. I need to make some major accommodations due to family events if I do, and I really need a complete book list that shows the primary books, separate from the supplemental or alternate books, and each list broken down by level andsubject, also showing how many weeks and which units the book will be used. It seems to new Bookshelf Central resource list is different from what it used to be. I wonder if this kind of list doesn't exist somewhere.

For example, I have heard & believe that The Odyssey is one of the books R will read, but when I publish the Bookshelf Central list with "all" subjects and "all" units, that book is never listed. I mean, I seriously need a complete book list, and I don't know where to find one.

on the TOG site, choose the Year Plan and then choose Resource List.

Irene, I think that the list you get at Bookshelf Central should be complete. I'm a worrier so I usually print off the one there and the one I find here: https://www.lampstandbookshelf...9aa1acef567fc74c8a22 and make sure they match up. The one at my link can be downloaded as an Excel file.

On the specific example you note, The Odyssey and other major works for Year 1 are found in the Norton Anthology of Western Literature, that's why they don't appear on the book list.

So there is no complete list of the works read? Without reading through every week plan assignment list, you cannot find out what works inside the Norton Anthology will be covered?
I have a lot of Ancient Literature, and don't know if I need to buy the Norton Anthology; also, I just would like to know what Ancient lit we would be using.

    Irene,

We have two ways to deliver what you are requesting.

    1. Purchasers of TOG access a more complete list than do those who have purchased. I know this is a bit of a Catch 22, but we do the best we can to indicate what we offer.

    2. Perhaps this page would help you. If you scroll down, you'll see a Scope and Sequence listed there. It lists the Literature works that are then mostly contained within the Norton Anthology that we recommend.

    HTH!

    Marcia,
I have purchased a couple of years (DE) but don't remember seeing any different list. Where would I have found that? Isee what is on the Scope & Sequence. Is that the complete list of Year I R level books? Thanks for your response.

    Irene,

For Lit, yes. Those are the works/topics that the current latest version of Year 1 covers. And most, but not all, are included in the Norton Ancient World recommended resource, plus we do a lot with Ryken's *Words of Delight*.
    Blessings,
    Marcia

    Hi, Irene!

The Resource List will show which titles are used in any given unit for any given level and subject.

If you are logged into the store, the Resource List will give more specific information (like the specific weeks the resource is used) for any unit that you've purchased.

    Does that answer your question?

Irene, I think the link Marcia gave will help you, but I wanted to horn in with an opinion. You are free to ignore.

Back when I was in high school, I wanted to read some of the original works that I had heard of but did not study in the school I attended. I found copies of works like the Iliad and Odyssey and read them. They were okay.

Then four years ago as a new Tapestry mom I decided to take Marcia's challenge to read the R level lit and since I no longer owned the copies I had read, I bought the Norton.

Can I say, that the works were much, much better than I remembered? While I'm sure increased maturity helped, I also suspect that good, lively translation also helped a bunch? (Since four years ago, I've gone out on my own and I've found it worthwhile to read reviews of translators carefully and even in some instance to buy two copies with different translators?)

So I would suggest even if you could put together a package of books for much cheaper than the Norton (and you can find it used) it might be worthwhile to your student to buy it.

I also think next year you will have a harder time duplicating cheaply the works in the Norton Anthologies because Tapestry also uses a lot of smaller works which you'll have a hard time finding all in one source. Further, since the Norton edits larger works, your student will have less to read using the Norton.
