Questions have arisen about the brief notice concerning future policy changes regarding access of the Book Updates Charts for 3rd party purchasers of Tapestry year-plans. We want to reassure you that this was a forward-looking notice, and that we have every intention of giving all current TOG owners of used copies several good options as we transition to new policies. There are details that we had not yet settled before making the general announcement; we had no wish to unsettle anyone, and are sorry that the brevity of the announcement caused some of our current customers undue concern. We are now working hard on details, and will seek to make them public here as soon as we are sure of technical capabilities and other aspects of the new policies. Thanks in advance for your patience!

For the sake of clarity, please note the following terms and ways that we use them. They matter very much in this discussion:

DIRECT PURCHASE: Purchase of Lampstand Press products made from us: purchased new, with or without discounts.

3RD PARTY PURCHASE: Purchased used from one of our customers: not from Lampstand Press directly.

BOOK LISTS: These are generated for free by customers using the filter on the Bookshelf Central home page. These are in no way restricted. This will not change.

BOOK UPDATE CHARTS (BUCs): These are year-plan specific lists of Tapestry books, and all year-plan information (including books used in the past and then books that replace them) is presented on a FREE and open to the public Interface page. This shows the titles, authors, and cover art for replacement selections, which may be seen by anyone. Additionally, there are DOCUMENTS that contain actual reformatted replacement pages that one may insert into one's TOG notebook when books go out of print, or access for titles that have been replaced in upgrades (archive pages). Note: Only these *documents* that are linked to this interface page are currently limited to the use of purchasers of TOG from LP or, with our manual permissioning, accessed by purchasers of used copies of Tapestry.

REPLACEMENT BOOKS: These are titles that we search out, order out from sellers, read, accept or reject, and then (if necessary) rewrite Tapestry pages to include. Replacement books are chosen by a variety of criteria, but an important one is how closely the new book can mirror the out-of-print one. In *many* cases, the content is nearly identical, so if you see one title on, say, pyramids, the replacement copy will often not change any questions or discussion outlines at all. In this case, the replacement book's associated documents on the BUCs are minimal: a redo of one square on a copy of page 4. In some cases, conversely, books effect almost every week-plan, as recently when Sister Wendy's *story of Painting* went out of print, or in Year 4, the dialectic-level spine book went out. These books effected many, many weeks, so the replacement documents were quite extensive. Since each change--major or minor--means that we mount a copy of our entire Reading Assignment Chart for that week-plan, it is important for us to protect replacement pages when doing book replacements.

UPDATES: This is a term that we use for regular, planned revisions of the curriculum: more specifically, we call these GLOBAL UPDATES.

UPGRADES: This term refers to stepping up your version of TOG. Sometimes customers move from print to DE, or from DE to add printed copies. In the past, we have offered discounts to LP customers and 3rd party purchasers who wished to upgrade from either Classic to Redesigned curricula product or from Redesigned Print to Redesigned DE. Each of these moves has both costs and benefits; we have been extremely liberal with the discounts that we have offered in the past, and continue to offer one-time discounts for those who have used Redesign printed copies and wish to upgrade to DE for half price. Since we regard the purchase of a used copy as most commonly a "try before you buy" option, we limit this half-price discount to customers owning used copies only for one year-plan of your choice.

OBSOLETE: We hear this word used in ways that can become confusing to many. We feel that Tapestry is never obsolete for anyone who owns books that work with their current version of Tapestry. Such customers never need to update their copies at all ever. Each version of Tapestry is self-consistent and useable with every child as long as you own the books that it references (or can find reasonable substitutes). While one may FEEL that their copy is obsolete because it is not the newest or latest, this does not mean that it is so! Think of a car: if it's older, it may not have every feature of a newer car, but it still gets you down the road. So it is with older versions of Tapestry as long as you own books to go with *your* version of the curriculum. To quote a favorite movie of ours: "newer isn't always better; sometimes it's just new."
