Geography vs. TOG maps

I have a bunch of competing thoughts swirling in my head. Is it enough for geography to do the suggested maps? Where does memorizing countries come in? Is that even important? My perspective right now is thinking that the Challenge A class from Classical Conversations mapping the world by memory is a good thing to do to memorize our world, but then I think that actually having a reason to learn about history and the geography associated with that is also good to do. I'm not sure I want to do both? Any suggestions or encouragement to just stick completely with TOG in this area?

In Year Four there is a memorization project where younger students memorize states and capitals and older students memorize world countries so Tapestry will eventually do both just not in Year One.
