I am starting TOG this yr with my 9yr old 4th grade student. We have a co-op meeting in our area that will be doing yr 3. Would it be recommended or ok to start my daughter with yr 3 so we could be involved in this co-op? Or do you recommend starting with yr 1?

Yes! This would work fine. Each year plan is designed so the first unit gets everyone up to speed in terms of the type of work Tapestry expects at each level. Each year plan also may have some "summer reading" that you'll want your daughter to do as well. This will not be a lot, never more than one book, I think.
Let me add this to Pat's good answer: it would be important that your daughter has studied the basic flow of history up to the 1800's, world wide. So, if she hasn't, I'd advocate using summer months to work through a basic text book, or listen to such materials as Diane Waring's audio history, or some such, just so that she'll be current with the threads that TOG picks up as she enters co-op in the fall. Also important with co-op studies is to be clear on book list requirements, and do YOUR homework during the summer so that you have the books you need for her in house ahead of when they'll be needed each week.
