    Getting the full effect


    I really love TOG but have struggled over the years with feeling overwhelmed by it all. I just don't feel like I am using certain components that might really benefits us. I don't use them because I don't fully understand why we need them and what purpose they serve. So, I am thinking of going to school. . .TOG school. I am looking at getting the teacher DVDs and working my way through those over the year. We are in the middle of Y2 right now and will start Y3 in January. I'm working through the Primer with my 3 younger kids because it really eliminated the need to make choices for them (which I am still trying to get better at and not feeling like I have to do it all.) By the time we start school next year, I'd like to have a better feel for all that we are doing at each level so that my planning and implementation is better. Will the Teacher DVDs help with that? I am planning to order the new game (sorry, I forgot the title right now) and would like to order the DVDs if I can get advice on whether they will help me.

    Yes! the teacher DVDs are very helpful.

    I also can't tell how old your students are. I have now been using Tapestry for our eighth year and have gone through UG up to R. With younger students the "full effect" doesn't really exist (at least not in my mind). They are not ready to have in depth Socratic discussions. Yes, you can have interesting discussions with them, but it is not the same.

    One of the things that attracted me to Tapestry from other similar programs was Tapestry starts with the R level student in focus and as the driver of the program. You are always working to that student. Other programs don't do that, and honestly, I think they end up with less strong programs in high school because the programs never quite transition to the wonderful thinking involved program that Tapestry is.

    If your children are all UG and down or even D and down, do what Marcia implies when she talks about the "oldest student" in your house being you: study and learn your self. Even if you read only a couple R level books each year from the program and you only work slowly through the DVDs and don't have instant success you will slowly learn.

    The Teacher DVDs will help you tremendously. They are all great! We have free ones too! You can find them on the website. Hover over the Curriculum tab and then click on "Teaching with Tapestry" or "Plan with Tapestry".

    Students will study for different amounts of time according to what level you are teaching. The general guideline is as follows:
    LG- 15 minutes per subject
    UG- 20 minutes per subject
    D- 30 minutes per subject
    R- 60-90 minutes per subject

    As you can see the older the student the more in depth you will get. Many times as moms we think we have to do so much to get it right. Then we become overwhelmed and the student gets overwhelmed and it snowballs from there. Start by doing your homework for each week. Read the Teacher's Notes and get a good feel for what the week holds for you and your student.
    For the little students do hands-on projects and introduce them to the topics each week. Do salt dough and cookie dough maps for geography. Choose one activity for the week to complete. Do read-aloud books and ask simple questions to see if they have a good comprehension of History and Literature selections. We now have Primer and you said you are using this so you have a great start in how to scale down Tapestry for the K student. Primer takes a portion of each year-plan so instead of studying one time period, students will be getting a history survey from Ancient times to Modern day.
    For the older LG and UG student you will be getting more into literature work sheets and reading on their own. They should be able to do map worksheets and listen to older students discussions. They may still want to do fun maps made with salt dough and cookie dough. Lapbooks are perfect for this learning level. They help cement the learning process and after they are completed they have a beautiful memory of what they studied in each unit.
    For the Dialectic student learning will consist of making connections between events, the time period in history, and what was going on in the world. It's a wonderful time of opportunity to start getting more in depth with the student. They will have thinking and accountability questions and start have formal discussions in History and Literature for each week.
    R will be getting more of an in-depth study of the topics and start to synthesize the answers. You will have in-depth discussions and lectures for this learning level in History and Literature for each week.

    The main products that I would recommend for any student is Map Aids (if you are doing Geography) and Writing Aids (if you are doing the writing portion of Tapestry). These to me are key supplements that help the teacher so much that they literally pay for themselves in how much easier it will be for you each week.
    Evaluations are important for testing but when to start those is all an individual choice. We’ve already talked about Lapbooks. They are a wonderful, beautiful, colorful way to incorporate learning for the week and unit.
    Pop Quiz is a summary for Dads to listen to and ask two or three questions per week. It keeps them involved and helps have more accountability for students.
    Key Documents in Government Studies are used only in Rhetoric. You do not need to do these for every year unless you would just like to continue your study in Government. Usually one or two years of Government will suffice for the amount of credit hours required by your state.
    Shorter Works Anthology is also for the Rhetoric student. They will need this in Year 2 and Year 3 to complete their English or Literature Credits for each of those years.
    Remember to be flexible and don’t worry about doing everything. Pick and choose and have fun with it. Tapestry gives you many more choices than any family can do in a week. You just need to decide on what is right for your family. You don’t have to do every subject every day. Do Geography on Tues. and Thurs. Do Literature on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. There is a reason Tapestry doesn't give you a day by day lesson plan….flexibility!
    Our core is History, Literature, and Writing. Anything beyond these subjects is electives. This is to help you limit what you do. You have other subjects that you need to teach as well that is not included within the Tapestry year-plan, so don’t chose so many options that it isn't possible to do it all.
